Airplane Food
Thousands of Feet Above Travel Log
So I’m back from a long hiatus. Work got too busy but finally, time for a vacation. Good-bye, Hawaii!
Certainly did not plan to write about airplane food. But what I felt to be a stark contrast between the adult and kids' meals on this airline just sparked an idea for the blog.
It was a 1:15am flight. I was not expecting any meal service till morning so I was surprised we were getting a full meal service.
The child’s meal, as usual was served first. “Nothing spectacular,” I thought (at first). The tomato sauce completely covered the protein so I couldn’t tell what it was.
Then, my meal arrived....maybe the
kid’s meal did look better. The choy sum lacked seasoning and looked dreary. And the chicken was somewhat bland. Sorry, no picture. Didn’t feel
inspired to take one.
I haven’t flew this airline in two years. And was a little disappointed. I seem to remember the food as better. Don’t get me wrong,
I’m glad that they still serve meals on Asian airlines and the food has always
been decent, some better than others. But why does the child’s meal looks and
tastes better?
The fish in the kid’s meal (after pushing aside the abundant tomato sauce) was cooked just right and the sauce was seasoned well. I ate the whole thing since my son decided to snooze instead.

Breakfast was better. We had the choice of a
ham frittata or seafood porridge. Not a fan of ham myself so I picked the
seafood porridge.
It was more like a scallop porridge or mini scallop porridge. The ginger definitely helped with the flavor. The addition of spinach and goji berries was appreciated. Overall, much better than dinner. The kids' meal?
Tater tots and chicken nuggets! My son was excited. He said,
“just like school lunch”. And it came with square, latticed apple Danish, which
he said was yummy and asked me to take a picture of the inside – future food
blogger?
On the next leg, we were served lunch. They definitely put an effort into creating a meal that excites the children.
My son was excited. He said, “Mummy look! It’s a face: the eggs for eyes with olives for eyeballs and the sausage for a smile.” Cute! And he said it tasted good. He doesn’t normally eat fried rice omelets but he loved this one.
In case I was accused of being bias, here’s a picture of my meal.
Fish with rice. The fish was overcooked – I wish it was as soft as the fish I ate almost 18 hours ago...from the kids' meal. The pineapple was from a can while my son enjoyed two slices of fresh apples.
Most of us don’t expect a gourmet meal on the airplane.
Certainly not in the economy class but why the discrepancy in food presentation
and quality between the child’s and adult’s meal?? I would like my fish to be
just as well cooked and food as well seasoned please. Perhaps on the flight
back I will have better things to say about the adult’s meals.
